Microblading Encyclopedia

Everything you need to know about microblading, written by a specialist with 10+ years of experience and 3,500+ treatments. This guide covers techniques, costs, healing, aftercare, and everything in between.

1. What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a form of semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing that uses a manual tool with ultra-fine needles to deposit pigment into the upper layers of skin, creating individual hair-like strokes. Unlike traditional tattooing, microblading targets the epidermis rather than the deeper dermis, which is why results fade naturally over time rather than turning blue or gray.

I've performed over 3,500 microblading treatments since 2016, and the most common reaction I hear is: "Why didn't I do this sooner?" The technique gives people with sparse, over-plucked, or naturally thin brows a natural-looking fullness that eliminates the need for daily brow makeup.

2. How Microblading Works

The process begins with a detailed consultation where I analyze your facial structure, skin tone, and natural brow growth pattern. I then map the ideal brow shape using precise measurements and golden ratio principles before any pigment touches your skin.

Using a sterile, single-use manual tool, I implant medical-grade pigment into the upper layers of skin with fine, feather-light strokes. Each stroke mimics a natural brow hair, resulting in brows that look completely real — even up close. The whole appointment is a single 90 minutes block, numbing included — because I map the shape and get your approval before any pigment goes in, instead of deciding it stroke by stroke as we go.

3. Techniques & Styles

There are several approaches to eyebrow PMU (semi-permanent makeup). What actually separates them is how the pigment goes in — by hand or by machine — and how saturated the brow ends up:

  • Classic Microblading: A manual tool only. Individual hair strokes, and the look that stays most natural as it ages. This is where I start most people.
  • Combination Brows: Microblading plus a light, strategically placed amount of machine shading. I reach for it when the existing hair is thick and coarse but patchy, or when someone wants more drama than strokes alone give. How much shading sets how dramatic — it is never automatic.
  • Powder/Ombre Brows: Machine shading with no hair strokes — a soft, filled-in look closer to makeup. Not something I offer.
  • Nano Brows: Machine-created hair strokes. Machine only is exactly what separates nano from combination brows. Not something I offer either, though I explain the difference in my nano brows comparison.

Your skin type does not pick which of these you get — it shapes your aftercare and how fast the color fades (section 16). Here is how the choice actually gets made in my chair: I complete all the microblading first, you look at your finished brows in the mirror, and only then do you decide whether to add shading. Same appointment, nothing committed in advance.

I will be straight about the one part that does not reverse. Once machine shading is in the skin, every future touch-up and refresher has to be shading too — manual strokes will not lay over a saturated brow. Microblading now and combination brows later is an open door; the other direction is closed. That is why I lean toward microblading only wherever it fits: it keeps your options open for the next ten years, not just this appointment.

4. Microblading vs Other Brow Methods

5. Who Is Microblading For?

Microblading is ideal for people who want natural-looking brow enhancement. You might be a great candidate if you have sparse brows, over-plucked brows, brow gaps, or simply want to simplify your morning routine. Check my candidate checklist, or take my 60-second candidacy quiz to see if you're a fit.

Microblading may not be suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have certain skin conditions (like active eczema in the brow area), or are on blood-thinning medications. I always discuss medical history during the consultation.

6. The Consultation Process

Every microblading journey starts with a free consultation. During this 20-minute session, I evaluate your skin type, discuss your brow goals, show you before-and-after photos of similar clients, and answer every question you have.

Book your free consultation — there's zero obligation.

7. What Happens During the Procedure

Every microblading appointment is a single 90 minutes session. I map and get your approval on the shape before any pigment touches your skin, so there's no redrawing or renegotiating partway through. Here's what happens step by step:

  1. Numbing cream is applied (20 minutes to take effect)
  2. I map and design your brow shape for your approval
  3. Pigment color is custom-mixed to match your natural hair
  4. Hair strokes are created one by one
  5. A second pass adds density where needed
  6. Aftercare instructions are reviewed

8. Pain & Comfort Level

Most clients rate the discomfort at 2-3 out of 10. Premium numbing cream is applied before and during the procedure. Many clients describe the feeling as light scratching — far less intense than a traditional tattoo. Read more about what microblading really feels like.

9. Healing Timeline

Microblading healing progresses through distinct phases over 4-6 weeks. Here's what to expect:

  • Days 1-3: Brows appear darker and bolder than final result
  • Days 4-7: Flaking and peeling begins (do not pick!)
  • Days 8-14: Color appears lighter — this is temporary
  • Weeks 3-6: True color emerges as skin fully heals

For the full day-by-day breakdown, read my hour-by-hour healing guide, or visualize all four phases with my interactive healing timeline tool.

10. Aftercare Guide

Proper aftercare is critical — your results are 50% my skill and 50% your aftercare. Key aftercare rules include keeping brows dry for 10 days, avoiding sun exposure, no picking or scratching, and applying thin ointment layers as directed.

Read my complete PMU aftercare guide and review the pre & post care instructions.

11. Touch-Ups & Maintenance

A touch-up appointment is scheduled 6-8 weeks after your initial session. This is when I perfect the shape and add density where pigment didn't retain as strongly. It's a normal part of the process — not a sign something went wrong.

Annual refresher appointments help maintain vibrancy. Learn more in my complete touch-up guide.

12. How Long Results Last

Microblading typically lasts 12-18 months before a refresher is needed. Factors that affect longevity include skin type (oily skin fades faster), sun exposure, skincare products (retinol accelerates fading), and how well you follow aftercare.

13. Cost & Pricing

Microblading pricing varies significantly based on location, artist experience, and technique. At Nirvana PMU, the first session includes custom mapping, application, and aftercare supplies; the required 6-8 week touch-up is a separate, disclosed charge. Read my detailed cost analysis to understand the value, or run the numbers yourself with my 5-year cost calculator.

14. Before & After Results

The best way to evaluate a microblading artist is through their before-and-after photos. Look for consistent, natural results across different skin tones and brow types. All photos should be taken in similar lighting conditions.

15. Risks & Safety Considerations

When performed by a trained, licensed professional using sterile equipment, microblading is very safe. Potential risks include allergic reaction to pigment (rare), infection from improper sterilization, and unsatisfactory results from inexperienced artists.

I use single-use, disposable tools for every client and maintain the highest sanitation standards. All pigments are hypoallergenic and FDA-compliant.

16. Skin Type Considerations

Your skin type changes your aftercare and how long the color holds — it does not change which technique you get. Normal to dry skin retains pigment best and produces the crispest hair strokes. Oily skin pushes pigment out faster, so strokes soften sooner and you land at the shorter end of the 12-18 month range. That means a different aftercare routine and a refresher sooner, not a different tool.

"Oily skin means you need shading" is the industry's shortcut, and I don't use it. Machine work does last longer — a machine implants more pigment per pass than a manual tool does. But lasting longer is not the same as looking natural or staying true to color, and that is not a trade I will make on your behalf before you have even seen your brows. Every skin type gets microbladed here. What changes is what I send you home with, and how soon I want you back. Combination brows stay on the table for the reasons that actually call for them — hair that is thick and coarse but patchy, or a client who wants more drama.

17. Color & Pigment Selection

Choosing the right pigment color is crucial for natural results. I custom-mix pigments to match your natural hair color and skin undertone, considering how colors will heal and fade over time. Pigment selection is discussed in detail during your consultation.

18. Brow Shapes for Different Face Types

The ideal brow shape varies based on your face structure. Round faces benefit from a higher arch, while square faces look best with a softer, curved brow. Use my interactive brow shape for face shape guide to explore options.

19. How to Choose a Microblading Artist

Choosing the right artist is the most important decision in your microblading journey. Look for:

  • Proper licensing and certifications

20. Common Microblading Myths Debunked

  • "It looks fake": When done well, microblading is undetectable. Each stroke mimics real hair.
  • "It's permanent": Microblading is semi-permanent and fades naturally over 12-18 months.
  • "It's extremely painful": With numbing cream, most clients rate discomfort 2-3/10.
  • "Anyone can do it": Quality varies enormously. Training, experience, and artistic skill matter immensely.
  • "Oily skin needs a different technique": Oily skin needs different aftercare and fades sooner — that part is real. It does not need a different technique. Skin type shapes your maintenance, never the tool in my hand.

21. History of Microblading

Microblading originated in Asia over 25 years ago and has evolved significantly. The technique was refined in Japan and South Korea before gaining popularity in Europe and North America around 2015. Modern tools, pigments, and training have made today's microblading safer and more natural-looking than ever.
